This illustration went with a story by Stephen Leacock about making fun of the “undefended border” between Canada and the United States, in reference to customs officials. I found two parts interesting. Beyond the expected questions of his residence and whether he was going for work, he was asked if he had any whiskey, since Prohibition was in force, and whether he had ever been vaccinated, to which he replied that he had been vaccinated long ago during the great smallpox scare of 1889.
